Challenging stereotypes to build a supportive classroom

In today's multicultural world, it is more important than ever for educators to create inclusive and diverse learning environments. To support this goal, the Erasmus Learning Academy (ELA) recently held its first course in Porto (Portugal) titled "Diversity in the classroom: teaching tolerance and overcoming prejudices and discrimination".

From 21/07/2024 to 27/07/2024, educators from across Europe came together to explore strategies for fostering inclusivity in their classrooms, including Ivana, Anna Maria, Laura and Cinzia from IC Cuneo Oltrestura (Italy), Carine from Lasalle Saint Charles (La Réunion, France), Maria Jesús from IES LOS ALCORES - San Miguel de Salinas (Spain), Dominik from Städtisches Willi-Graf-Gymnasium (Germany), Urszula from Szkoła Podstawowa z Oddziałami Integracyjnymi nr 3 (Poland) and Jessica from IES Virgen de la Encina (Spain).

The course began with a series of activities designed to help participants reflect on their own identities, exploring how personal experiences, backgrounds, and values shape perceptions and interactions. Through creative exercises like drawing self-portraits that depicted both visible traits and inner values, educators gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of identity. This understanding is vital in recognizing the diverse identities of their students and creating classroom environments that honor and respect these differences.

Addressing and challenging stereotypes and prejudices was a central focus of the program, as these are often unconscious barriers to true inclusivity. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions and storytelling sessions that delved into the origins of stereotypes, examining how they develop and the harmful impacts they can have on individuals and the learning environment. By equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to identify and dismantle these biases, the course aimed to foster a more equitable and respectful atmosphere where all students can thrive.

The concept of privilege was also a key topic, encouraging teachers to reflect on how various forms of privilege influence their perspectives and teaching practices. Through interactive activities and simulations, participants were prompted to critically assess their own advantages and understand the implications of these privileges in their interactions with students. This reflection is crucial for creating a classroom culture that recognizes and values diverse experiences, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.

Empathy and inclusion were themes that resonated throughout the course, as they are essential components of a truly diverse classroom. Participants engaged in collaborative exercises that demonstrated the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for every student. By learning effective strategies for building supportive classroom communities and managing conflicts in a constructive manner, educators were empowered to create environments where students feel safe, understood, and encouraged to express themselves.

ELA is thrilled with the success of its inaugural course in Porto, which proved to be an enriching and transformative experience for all involved. The week-long program not only provided participants with practical approaches to promoting diversity and inclusion but also renewed their commitment to these values. By equipping educators with the tools and insights needed to combat stereotypes and foster empathy, the course has made a meaningful contribution to creating more understanding and cohesive educational communities.
