Working in a team is not always easy: different personalities, miscommunications and an unclear definition of roles are all aspects that can negatively impact on the efficiency of the group. For this reason, the aim of this course was to learn a variety of skills that can both ensure team efficiency but also promote a positive environment in the workplace. By participating in this course our participants got some inputs on how to become better team leaders and team members, whether it’s inside a classroom or with colleagues. The new edition of the course “Effective Group Management in education: building Teamwork among students” took place in Tenerife,from 06/10/24 to 12/10/2024. The participants came from all across Europe, with Jojanneke Hulsker and Annelies Brinkman from Het Baarnsch Lyceum in Netherlands. During our recent course, participants delved into the dynamics of group work and team leadership. We began by distinguishing between groups and teams, emphasizing that a team is driven by a shared goal. This understanding helped participants recognize the importance of prioritizing common objectives in team leadership. Next, we explored the significance of clearly defined team roles. Through interactive activities, participants experienced the challenges that arise when roles are ambiguous, leading to confusion and miscommunication. This highlighted the need for clarity to maximize efficiency and collaboration. On the third day, we shifted focus to effective team leadership. Participants learned to adapt their leadership styles based on the unique strengths and weaknesses of team members and the group as a whole. We discussed various leadership approaches, each with its advantages and drawbacks, and introduced coaching techniques to foster a growth mindset and maintain team motivation.Finally, we examined peer feedback and assessment strategies. By engaging in peer learning activities, participants gained insights into the learning process from their students’ perspectives, reinforcing the value of active participation in education.Overall, the week was enriching, filled with valuable insights and practical strategies.
