Creating truly inclusive classrooms means addressing complex gender dynamics and promoting a culture of respect, empathy, and equity. Throughout this week-long program, educators from across Europe engaged in a variety of collaborative activities aimed at understanding gender identity and preventing gender-based discrimination. The course “Preventing Gender-Based Discrimination and Promoting Gender Inclusiveness in the Classroom” took place in Bologna from 25/05/2025 - 31/05/2025. The participants came from various European countries, including Terhi Holst from Kristianstad University ın Sweden. Ruth Mangion, Rowena Psaila, Caroline Rose Camilleri and Elaine Bezzina from St Benedict College ın Malta. Daniela Bayer and Janik Weghorn from Mittelschule am Gerhart-Hauptmann-Ring ın Germany. The week began with exploring definitions of gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, and gender expression. Working groups were formed to discuss real-life gender-based dynamics among students, examining how these issues affect students’ wellbeing and their ability to stay in school. Moving forward, participants reflected around gender norms, considering how these societal expectations influence students’ performance, self-esteem, and self-expression. Through Intersectionality theory and guided exercises, educators gained insight into gender-based privilege and discrimination, and discussed how prejudices, stereotypes, and discrimination are interconnected and most importantly, how schools can begin to break this vicious circle. Midweek sessions focused on defining and unpacking gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, and assault. Educators discussed rape culture and explored ways to teach consent to students as a proactive measure in preventing these harmful phenomena. The emotional dimension of inclusiveness was addressed by discovering Goleman’s emotional intelligence pillars. Through activities centered on identifying and describing emotions, participants practiced collaborative and group-based methods to nurture active listening and empathy within the classroom. To close the week, teachers explored concrete strategies for fostering inclusivity. The final session offered practical guidance on how to ensure an inclusive classroom, including a collection of tips, activities, and a final handbook of best practices aimed at promoting gender inclusiveness across all educational levels.
