Effective communication and soft skills are crucial for educators and educational staff, both inside the classroom and in other professional settings. These courses support participants in developing emotional intelligence, teamwork, and public speaking abilities through a combination of theoretical learning and practical exercises. The new edition of the combined courses “Soft Skills and Emotional Intelligence for teachers and education staff” and “Effective Communication and Public Speaking for teachers and education staff” took place in Tenerife from 06/04/2025 to 12/04/2025. The participants came from all across Europe, including Marje Kask and Eva-Kadri Rossner from Luua Forestry School in Estonia; Svatava Hrdá from Arcibiskupské gymnázium v Kroměříži in Czech Republic; Eeva Palin from Live-säätiö sr in Finland; Jessica Zallin, Maria Mogyoro and Kamilla Svanlund from Hermods AB in Sweden; Uda Dedaj from Deutsche Schule Sofia in Bulgaria; Pavol Stach from Gymnazium Viliama Paulinyho-Totha in Slovakia; Hannes Björkbacka from Hermods AB in Sweden. Introduction to Soft Skills marked the start of the course, emphasizing their significance in both professional and personal life. To encourage engagement, participants took part in a public speaking activity to introduce themselves, combining self-expression with the opportunity to practice speaking in front of an audience.
The next session concentrated on Emotional Intelligence, emphasizing the ability to recognize and manage both personal emotions and those of others. Through interactive exercises, participants explored empathy, self-control, and self-motivation—key qualities for building meaningful relationships both in and outside the classroom. Next, in the session on Effective Communication and Assertiveness, participants explored various communication styles—aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive—and discussed the importance of clearly and confidently expressing oneself while maintaining respect and professionalism. Developing strong Public Speaking skills was another major focus of the course. Participants learned techniques to enhance their body language, control nonverbal communication, and effectively structure their speeches. To apply these skills, they prepared and delivered a short speech, gaining confidence in speaking before an audience. To reinforce their learning, they participated in another public speaking exercise, focusing on different speech structures. The final session focused on Conflict Management, addressing the challenges of collaboration and handling difficult situations. By sharing personal experiences, participants realized that conflicts don’t always result in negative outcomes but can lead to growth and development when managed effectively.
