The Influence of Outdoor Learning on Preschoolers

​Spending time in nature significantly influences the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional development of preschoolers. This is especially crucial in the context of climate change, as children who grow up connected to the outdoors are more likely to develop a sense of responsibility for the environment and the planet. Outdoor education is an innovative teaching approach that not only enhances the quality of learning but also fosters environmental awareness. By integrating outdoor experiences into education, we can address two of today’s most pressing issues: providing high-quality, long-lasting education and instilling a deep commitment to protecting our planet in the face of climate challenges.

The new edition of the course “The Influence of Outdoor Learning on Preschool” took place in Tenerife from 15/03/2025 to 21/03/2025. The participants came from all across Europe, Veronique, Nele and Els from Basisschool De Kleine Prins in Belgium, Lilly, Mats, Harriet, Tiina and Susanne from Luleå Kommun förskola in Sweden and Robert from Anna-Freud-Schule BBS-SGH in Germany.
Beginning with an exploration of the concept of Outdoor Education, we analysed and discussed its benefits, providing participants with an opportunity to share their own experiences of teaching in nature. As this course was specifically designed for preschool teachers, attendees also learned about the Italian education system and presented overviews of their schools to compare different teaching methods and approaches.

Another key component of the course involved hands-on activities in a local park, where participants engaged in various outdoor games. These activities were highly appreciated and inspired teachers to adapt and plan similar experiences tailored to their students' needs.
Participants also explored the importance of outdoor space planning, learning to assess and familiarize themselves with an area in advance to minimize potential risks. Through practical exercises, they identified key zones, including engaging play areas, rest spots, and potentially hazardous locations.

This hands-on approach provided valuable insights into creating safe and effective outdoor learning experiences.
Finally, a visit to a local outdoor kindergarten allowed participants to observe a successful example of outdoor learning in practice.They witnessed first hand how children interact with both their peers and the natural environment, gaining deeper insights into the practical application of outdoor education principles.

The final section of the course focused on developing green skills and incorporating them into teaching. Participants gained insights into climate change through theoretical discussions and practical strategies for introducing the topic to young children using interactive games and activities.
Throughout the course, they explored a diverse range of hands-on experiences that can be easily adapted for their students, emphasizing that learning extends beyond the classroom walls!
