English is known to be the “international language”, connecting people from different countries and enabling communication in different fields, from business to academic research, from fashion to computers and so on.
Through the “Intensive English Language Course for education staff”, a group of teachers from different countries and schools, challenged themselves into the study of this language, with a positive attitude, putting the maximum effort in every activity proposed. The new edition of the course took place in Palermo from 23/07/2023 to 29/07/2023. We had the pleasure to welcome a group composed by Aleksandra and Paweł from Ogólnopolski Operator Oświaty in Poland, Stéphanie from Ecole Marguerite Picart in France, and five participants from Hungary, from two different schools : Enikő, Lívia and Tünde from Nyíregyházi SZC Wesselényi Miklós Technikum és Kollégium and Tamás and Dominika from BMSZC Újpesti Két Tanítási Nyelvű Műszaki Technikum. During the week, the participants addressed different challenges to improve five fundamental skills: Use of English, listening, reading, writing and speaking. We started this journey by introducing ourselves and addressing how to describe one’s job. The participants were given some starting vocabulary and then we focused a lot on an essential verb: the verb “to be” , also used to describe something or someone, to talk about age, feelings, nationalities, and much more. Starting from the second day, every morning we did a recap of the new knowledge acquired, through a morning wrap-up activity. Learning a language requires effort and practice. That’s why every session of theory during the course was accompanied by a lot of exercises and activities. As for grammar, the foundation of a language, many topics were covered: from prepositions and articles to the most important verb tenses but every unit of the course was also inspired by everyday situations. In fact, we saw how to ask questions with the use of the 5W and hot to answer, how to organise tasks during the day along with the vocabulary of routine activities and also the hours and schedules, like with a weekly plan. Other topics addressed were: the weather, clothes, appearance, describing home, a travel, and planning future activities. To promote an effective learning we realised our formative assessment and activities through games, quizzes, readings, real-life simulations and many more. The participants bravely accepted all the “speaking challenges” with enthusiasm and they also exploited every moment of break to talk to the other participants in English, sharing best practices and knowledge about their schools and countries. It was a very productive week, they improved their English really quick and we hope that they will continue in the study of English with such a positive attitude and that they will take care of the multicultural space that they managed to create in just one week.
